Look Unto Jesus in Every Thought — D&C 6-9

Three Thoughts from Me

  • I’m jealous that the Young Men and Young Women get a theme every year. But there’s a simple fix; I’m stealing it for myself. Especially this year, because it’s one of my favorite scriptures in one of my favorite chapters of scripture: “Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not” (D&C 6:36).

  • All week, I’ve pondered, exactly how does one, “look unto Jesus in every thought” and I realized I know how to do it and so do you. Each morning you check in with a  loved one, asking, “What do you have going on today? Anything I can help with?” Mid-day is time for a check-in text, “How’s your day going? How did that meeting go you were worried about? Love you.” Evening is for reviewing the day and sharing news. There’s time for sharing stories, expressing gratitude, “Thanks for making my lunch,” and time for making requests, “Could you help me with this problem?”  And there’s always a good-night hug.

  • Could looking unto Jesus in every thought be as simple as symbolically adding Jesus to your circle of loved ones? Could He be the first one you talk to in the morning and the last one you say good night?  Could He be first on your contact list and be included in your group texts? Could your heart be warmed when you see His picture on your phone, hear your favorite song about Him or remember a tender mercy He recently did for you? And at the end of the day, could you feel His arms encircle you with His love (D&C 6:20)?

Two Quotes from Others

  • “Jesus is never in a forgotten corner, because our thoughts of Him are always present and ‘all that is in [us adores] him!’ We pray and rehearse in our mind experiences that have brought us closer to Him. We welcome into our mind divine images, holy scriptures, and inspired hymns to gently cushion the countless daily thoughts rushing through our busy lives.”   –Elder Neil L. Anderson

  • “Our focus must be riveted on the Savior and His gospel. It is mentally rigorous to strive to look unto Him in every thought. But when we do, our doubts and fears flee.”  –President Russell M. Nelson

One Experiment for You

  • Pick a loved one you think about often during the day. Try thinking of Jesus each time you think of this person, even imagining them together. Notice what happens as you increase your daily thoughts of Him.
