Record Sacred Memories to Become Unshakeable — Jacob 5–7

Come, Follow Me: Book of Mormon 2024 (April 8—14)

While on a Cannon Beach vacation we lost the rental car keys. After hours of searching on our own, it was time to ask for divine help. Within minutes of the family prayer, the keys were found in the grass near the back door, a place trampled by large and tiny feet in hours of play.

Sherem was a successful influencer for the devil. Using powerful speech, he flattered his listeners and led them away from Christ with the clear intention of “overthrowing” the doctrine of Christ. Without faith, repentance, baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost those who accepted his platform were free to eat, drink, and be merry, setting aside the need for truth and moral standards.

But when Sherem approached Jacob, he found a man who could not be shaken. “And he had hope to shake me from the faith, notwithstanding the many revelations and the many things which I had seen concerning these things for I truly had seen angels, and they had ministered unto me. And also, I had heard the voice of the Lord speaking unto me in the very word, from time to time; wherefore, I could not be shaken” (Jacob 7:5).

Our spiritual experiences or “rays of light” as described by Elder Dashku in the most recent conference, are sacred, personal treasures that can be used when we need to remember God’s love and His role in our life. When recorded and read often, our own spiritual experiences anchor our foundation to the bedrock of Christ, making us unshakeable.

“Embrace your sacred memories. Believe them. Write them down. Share them with your family. Trust that they come to you from Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son. Let them bring patience to your doubts and understanding to your difficulties. I promise you that as you willingly acknowledge and carefully treasure the spiritually defining events in your life, more and more will come to you” (Neil A. Anderson).

To learn how to record and preserve spiritual experiences, I found the book, Bring Forth Your Record by Rachel Matthews very helpful. The chapter on helping teens and children recognize and record personal revelation is especially valuable.

Do Hard Divinely Better Lesson #14: Record sacred memories and use them as touchstones in difficult times.
