3-2-1 on the Joy of Missing Out (JOMO)

3 Thoughts from Terri

  1. I love making cutout sugar cookies. It’s so satisfying to roll out the dough, place the cookie cutter in the perfect spot, push it into the dough and then clean away the extra dough to produce a perfectly shaped reindeer, snowman, or star.

The joy of missing out (JOMO) is deciding your life’s pattern (your cookie cutter) and then cleaning up the edges by saying no to requests or opportunities that take away from what you’ve identified as the most important.

  1. JOMO can be found in asking yourself, “If I say yes to this, what have I said no to?” No to the meeting can mean yes to the date night. No to scrolling can mean yes to reading a good book. No to watching Netflix can mean yes to taking a walk.

  2. “Can this moment be found again?” is also a good criterion. Quality time spent with loved ones may not be recreated later.

2 Quotes from Others

“Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.”
-Allen Saunders

“Oh, I’ve had my moments.
If I had to do it over again,
I’d have more of them.
In fact, I’d try to have nothing else-just moments,
one after another, instead of living so many years ahead of each day.”

1 Challenge

Holidays are a great time to practice JOMO. Visualize yourself having a season filled only with those activities that enthuse and inspire you. Decide early your highest priorities and experience the joy of missing out on what doesn’t matter this year.
