Then Behold with Love — Matthew 19–20; Mark 10; Luke 18
Come, Follow Me: New Testament 2023 (May 8-14)
One of the most life-changing trainings I attended was from the Arbinger Institute. It proposed that we often see people in one of three ways: 1) as a vehicle to get what we want or need, 2) as a barrier to what we want or need, or 3) just plain irrelevant.
Let me give you some examples. The last time you purchased groceries did you see the person who checked or who bagged for you? Or were you just annoyed that the purchase was going slow because you were in a hurry. Did you notice what your spouse or child was wearing this morning? When was the last time you really saw them as a beloved person rather than the person who needs to pick up their clothes, pick up your dry cleaning or stop and pick up dinner?
When the young rich man came to Jesus to ask him what to do to inherit eternal life, Mark describes an exquisite moment of care, love and really seeing the person who had run to speak to him, “Then Jesus beholding him loved him… (Mark 10:21). Notice that this sweet demonstration of love came before any discussion.
Can you remember a time when another person really saw you, wanted to know you, and made you feel deeply loved? In contrast, do you know how it feels to be treated as a vehicle, a barrier, or simply irrelevant?
Try this week to see people first–as people. Look at them. Notice them. Call them by name. Recognize their reality–their concerns, hopes, needs, and fears. Before you make requests, give feedback, or ask questions, try to behold them with love. And if you need a coach, don’t forget to ask Him who is the perfect example of beholding with love.
