The Value of a Love Letter — Romans 7–16

Come, Follow Me: New Testament 2023 (August 14–20)

Who doesn’t cherish receiving a love letter? While an email is nice, we’re less likely to print it off and save it to be reread. But a letter, pulled from an envelope, is special (and rare). Letters can be placed in a favorite box or drawer, bound with ribbon or string, readily accessible when comfort and encouragement are needed. They are visible, tangible evidence that someone who cares took extra time to express their love and appreciation for you.

Romans 8 is a sweet love letter, written by Paul to the beloved saints in Rome (Romans 1:7), but can be read as a personal message to us today. It is filled with truths, reminders, and encouragement that can be reread when times are hard. Here are some of the messages that touch my heart:

“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8: 5, 6).

“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16).

“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

“…the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26).

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

When was the last time you wrote a love letter? Consider writing one to someone who needs your words this week. Share why they are beloved; give encouragement and describe truths that keep you moving forward. Like the letters of Paul, your words can be a reminder that “nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).
