God’s Creations Gladden Our Hearts – John 1
Come, Follow Me: New Testament 2023 (Jan. 16–22)
Several years ago, I had a CT scan that was housed in a trailer next to the hospital. Being claustrophobic, it took all my courage to lie still in this terrifying tube. But while I was there, I heard the sweet sound of birds singing. What a balm of Gilead! I immediately relaxed and focused on their cheerful chirping until the test was done.
“All things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). Didn’t Christ do a good job creating this world? He didn’t have to give flowers fragrance, or tigers stripes. How about those bluebirds that are the color of sky? Or the millions of snowflakes that are unique and special, just as we are?
“Yea, and all things which come of the earth, in the season thereof, are made for the benefit and the use of man, both to please the eye and to gladden the heart.” (DC 59:18)
Spending time in nature can produce some of the most inspiring and delightful experiences in life. Research shows it can improve our health and mental health by increasing dopamine and serotonin in our brain–chemicals that improve mood and a sense of satisfaction. Well-being comes from being in natural light and partaking of the sensory feast that nature presents to us. This magnificent earth is evidence that God lives and loves us and being in nature provides sacred moments of deep gratitude for the ultimate Creator.
“So try this. The next time a sunrise steals your breath…or a meadow of flowers leaves you speechless…remain that way. Say nothing and listen as heaven whispers, “Do you like it? I did it just for you” (God Thinks You’re Wonderful by Max Lucado).
Emotional Resilience Skill: Daily, let nature fill your spirit with comfort and awe.
