These Good Things: Waiting Well — D&C 2, JSH 1:27-65
Come, Follow Me: Doctrine and Covenants 2025
(January 20–January 26)
3 Thoughts from Me
From our viewpoint, it makes sense that there would be a three-year waiting period between the time a 14-year-old saw God and his son, Jesus Christ and when Moroni would appear to young Joseph to provide more instruction and tutelage. There is a lot of maturing that takes place between 14 and 17 years of age. But when we’re in the thick of thin, three years of waiting for something better, without a celestial perspective, can be bewildering and trying.
The Lord loves gardens and the eternal truths taught in planting and harvesting. If you’ve ever grown a plant, you know that once the seed is planted and nourished, the waiting begins and can’t be rushed. If you impatiently pull up the carrot when you first see leaves, you’ll never taste the carrot. The true joy of gardening is not just the harvest but loving the waiting and watching process of change and growth.
We can wait for the Lord, or we can wait with the Lord. The waiting place is not a time to languish or feel bitter with a mindset of “I’ll only be happy when...”. Instead, it can be a unique time of growing the divine fruits of faith, hope, and charity, trusting in the Lord’s promise, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint”(Isaiah 40:31).
2 Thoughts from Others
I realized that the Lord is constantly waiting for me. He’s waiting for me to see a problem, admit a wrong, swallow my pride, get on my knees, do the right thing. He’s infinitely patient with me even when I don’t deserve it. He waits for me every day. And I decided that I would wait for Him too. -Maryssa Dennis
Patience is not simply the ability to wait - it's how we behave while we're waiting. -Joyce Meyer
