How Do You Fill Your Spiritual Hunger? — Enos–Words of Mormon

Come, Follow Me: Book of Mormon 2024 (April 15—21)

This past year I’ve tried to lose weight and I’ve learned two important lessons. First, weight loss is fickle! The scale can change with a whiff of wind, but weighing regularly is tied tightly to my daily food choices.

Second, there are many types of hunger, and the solution is not always food. It can be a hunger for relief from stress, a hunger to belong, a hunger for certainty amidst uncertainty, a hunger for recognition or a hunger for love. It’s important to discern the true source of hunger and have ways to fulfill those hungers besides Chips Ahoy.

Enos, Jacob’s son, introduces us to another hunger, a hunger to connect with God, to fill his spiritual soul. His deepest desire was to understand and feel the words of his father on eternal life and joy (Enos 1:2, 3).

To satisfy this spiritual hunger, Enos did several notable things. He went to the forest where he could be alone and find undistracted quiet and stillness. His initial kneeling prayer outlined his fervent intention and commitment to do whatever it would take, even praying all day and night, to have his spirit filled with divine nourishment. He then went about hunting beasts while continuing his unrelenting prayers, alert and ready to hear from the heavens. Afterwards, Enos recorded his experience so it could be a future source of nourishment for himself, his family and for all of us who love his Book of Mormon experience.

The past weekend of conference filled my soul to the brim. It was a spiritual Thanksgiving with all the trimmings. But like physical hunger, one large meal doesn’t last very long before hunger returns. Spiritual hunger must be fed daily with healthy foods that replenish the soul. Finding daily spiritual “foods” to help us remember and rely on Christ throughout the day is as important as discovering nutritious meals that fill up and feel good.

Like Enos, I’m trying to stay connected with heaven while I’m hunting (e.g., work, laundry, shopping etc.). I want more quiet pauses throughout the day where I check-in and ask, “Am I doing what Thou would have me do?”.  I could call this my spiritual snacking!
